Easter Egg Hunt at Wray Castle | Exploring the Lake District

We have been to Wray Castle in the South Lakes a few times now, and the children love it here. If you've read my post about our 2021 visit to Wray Castle, you'll know I think it makes a fabulous day out for all the family. Now it's time to write about it again because they've got a perfect new addition for the 2025 Easter holidays.

Read on to check out everything you need to know about Wray Castle and their new Easter trail. As usual I’ve included all you need to plan your very own Easter holiday family day out.

About Wray Castle

For 180 years Wray Castle has sat on the hillside above the lakeshore of Windermere, with stunning panoramic views of the lake and local Lake District fells. Opening its doors to visitors in 2011, it is a work in progress but still worth a visit (especially as it is currently free to do so!)

Please note that Wray Castle and the adventure playground are currently shut to visitors for 2025 while they renovate and rebuild. There are still plenty of places to explore, however, and it still makes for a wonderful place to enjoy time together as a family.

FAQs about our family days out

How do I find Wray Castle?

There is a small car park next to the Castle, and a second slightly larger on the land just below. The car park is pay and display, but if you're a National Trust member you can park for free - don't forget to scan your membership card though!

To find the car park, use this post code: LA22 0JA

Is it suitable for children?

Even with the castle shut for renovations and the play trail awaiting its new look, there are still plenty of places to explore and the Easter trail is 100% geared towards the enjoyment of children of all ages. Plus, if you're up for a bit more of an adventure, take a hike and explore the local area down to Windermere or Blelham Tarn.

Can you take dogs to Wray Castle?

Yes! Don't forget that dogs must be kept on a lead and you must clean up after your fur baby. Make note of any local signs and notices to keep your dog and other visitors safe.

Is there anywhere to eat?

You have two options when visiting Wray Castle. First, as always, you can bring a picnic and use one of the picnic benches to enjoy a meal made at home.

Don’t forget to leave no trace. As with every outdoor space you visit, it is important you don’t leave rubbish behind, so take it home with you!

Alternatively, there is a café on site. The café is open Monday to Sunday, 9:30-4:30pm. Located toward the back of Wray Castle, Joeys Café is a plant-based café specialising in locally roasted espresso-based coffees.

Are there facilities available?

To the side of the castle near Joeys Café is a few facilities including an accessible toilet with changing facilities.

We absolutely loved our day out at Wray Castle. We spent hours in the Spring sun, exploring areas of the grounds we haven’t enjoyed previously. I can’t wait to return again soon, and enjoy the refurbished castle and brand new adventure play area once it’s all complete.
