With so many baby bed options available, from bedside cribs to cot beds; it can be hard to know what to choose. Read on to discover my top choices: cribs and Moses Baskets; with all the pros (and cons) you need to make an informed choice for your baby.
Cribs
Co-sleepers
Why I love using a co-sleeper
They are suitable for newborns.
It attaches to your bed, and with the side down allows for easy access to your baby for night time feeds.
It can be used up until your baby is around 6 months, outgrows the co-sleeper, or can sit independently. With Pickle we bought and used a SnüzPod (now being used by my niece!) until she was around 8 months.
Other pros to co-sleepers
They follow NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines regarding not bed-sharing, as your baby is in a separate cot or crib.
This means they minimise the increased risk of suffocation and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) most often associated with bedsharing; whilst still allowing your baby and you to reap the benefits of close proximity.
They are great if you have had a difficult birth, or c-section, and find having to move around painful. As they are attached to your bed, you don't have to get up, move around or walk to be able to reach out for your baby.
My favourite thing?
My choice: SnüzPod3*
About the all new SnüzPod3*
Having fallen in love with the Snüz brand over 3 years ago, I was so pleased to be able to work with them this year. Here's a bit of info about the all new SnüzPod3* Munchkin is lucky enough to have:
As with the original, it has a zip-down wall for easy access during the night. This is great for me, as I am breastfeeding and Munchkin loves a night feed.
The bassinet is wider, and yet lighter! It can also be lifted off which means I can move the crib around with ease if I need to.
There are breathable mesh sides on both sides of the crib. This allow me to see him, and him to see me, even if I am moving around the room on different sides.
There is a fabulous new reflux incline feature, which I have made use of as Munchkin (unlike his sisters) suffers terribly from reflux.
There is plenty of space beneath. This space I use to store spare sheets, muslins, nappies and any other essentials I may need readily available.
Extra accessories are available such as the SnüzPocket I bought for the end. It has plenty of storage space for essentials I may need during the night, including muslins, wipes and more.
Moses baskets
Pros
Moses baskets are super durable, and work really well as a comfortable space for your baby to sleep. We use ours as a safe space for Munchkin to nap during the day.
You can purchase a stand to go with your Moses basket which allows you to have it at a good height if you are sitting on the edge of your bed, or standing next to it.
They’re lightweight and have carry handles. This allows you to move it from place to place as well as use it with the stand. This means you can bring it to the kitchen while you wash up, the bathroom while you shower and many other places too.
It’s easy to transition your baby to their bigger bed by simply popping the Moses basket inside for a few days for them to get used to the new environment.
Cons
Sadly Moses baskets can only be used for a short period of time. They are recommended for the first 3-4 months. This means they can be quite an expensive option (especially if you choose, like us to only use them as a day bed.)
My choice: The Little Green Sheep natural knitted Moses basket*
Made from quality palm leaf it is super lightweight allowing me to move it around the house when I have jobs to do, with my rainbow baby always close by. He will only fall asleep with his eyes covered by his lovey, but once he falls asleep I make sure to remove all toys and can rest assured he is comfortable, secure and cosy in this safe space as he naps.
So, if you're wondering which bed is best for your newborn to start their earthside journey, I hope this post will help you make the choice that's best for you.
