This Christmas I will have a five year old, a three year old and a baby on the way. I still can't get my head around that! In the countdown to the big day I'm releasing my Christmas gift guides, including this one: Christmas gifts for five year olds.

This year I am doing my Christmas gift guides a little differently. You may have already seen I've written them around the “7 Gifts” idea. Read on to discover what the “7 Gifts” idea is, and 2019's top picks for Christmas gift ideas for 5 year olds in each category.

What is the "7 Gifts" idea?

We all, especially children, have had plenty of gifts over the years which get opened and never seen again. That's where the “7 Gifts" idea comes in.

The “7 Gifts” idea is designed to cut down on waste; ensuring gifts are needed, wanted and useful. The image below details the seven categories of the “7 Gifts” idea. (Feel free to pin it to Pinterest and share with friends and family!)

The "7 Gifts" Idea

Something they need

iBeani tablet bean bag*

Squidgy has a habit of sitting in strange places with her Kindle (usually because she's trying to keep it out of the way of her sister). Often that means it is precariously balanced, and has dropped to the floor more than once. In fact she even has a rather large scratch across the screen. With the iBeani®* I don't need to worry anymore. Designed to hold tablets or phones and is basically a bean bag. Plus they come in a fun variety of patterns; from stars to butterflies and more. Let's be honest, tablets like iPads and Kindles are not cheap. A Christmas gift for a 5 year old like Squidgy which will help to protect their tech is definitely a winner in my book.

Something they want

Role play toy sets

Squidgy absolutely loves her role play kitchen which my Grandparents bought her for Christmas a few years ago. Ever since we have tried to add new toys to the girls’ collection for playing alongside the kitchen. This year, Squidgy asked for the Melissa and Doug smoothie maker*, and I think it's fantastic (especially when you can order it from Amazon† and guarantee it arrives in time for Christmas with Prime!). It even comes with a recipe card to make up a variety of different smoothies and will result in hours of imaginative fun with your children.

Pixie Belles

Not long ago, Wowwee introduced the super cute Pixie Belles* which are to Squidgy's generation the Furby of my childhood! She first spotted it thanks to the TV advert and has since fallen in love with it, so it is the perfect Christmas gift for children like her! It dances, spins and even makes cute noises; especially when you pet it (like it's own version of a cat purring!
Pixie Belles are widely available too; at places like Argos, Amazon†, Smyths Toys and more. There are also a few different characters available in different colours, but Esme is definitely the right choice for Squidgy!

Playmobil

Playmobil is always a winner. In my 2018 Christmas gifts for four year olds I shared the amazing Playmobil Aquarium* as the perfect gift. This year, with the release of the Playmobil movie, the Marla in the Fairytale Castle playset* is my top pick (for Squidgy anyway!) With 162 pieces including a fairy, a princess and a unicorn it is definitely going to make Squidgy's Christmas that much more exciting. There are other playsets from the movie including a food truck and drone, so don't worry if fairies and castles aren’t to your five year old's taste!

Aquabeads

Playmobil isn't the only thing Squidgy loves to play with. In the past couple of years she had accumulated quite a collection of Aquabeads, that she, and one of her best friends, regularly love to get out and make. It's a relatively mess free activity so I’m happy with it too. Plus it's nostalgic as it's like a modern version of gamma beads I did as a child. This Frozen II character Aquabeads kit* is the perfect gift. She loves both the characters and the Aquabeads, making it an ideal gift idea. You can pick it up at most toy stores as well as on Amazon†.

Something to wear

Dresses (especially matching ones!)

If you haven’t figured out yet bu following me on social media, Primark is my go to for pretty much any style of clothing for the girls. From £2.50 basic cotton dresses to leggings and tees to amazing, elegant party dresses; they have everything. Plus they're always budget-friendly. Until Squidgy moves into the next size (she's currently in 7-8. Yes I know, she's 5 but she's tall!) I can also get them matching outfits. Twinning is winning, right?

Leggings

You most definitely cannot go wrong with leggings from Love Leggings*. We’ve all had a pair or two in the past and they are still a firm favourite brand for all of us (especially the maternity ones I'm wearing now!) They are true to size, lined with a soft lining, and super comfy. Plus, they have a beautiful variety of colours, lengths and sizes to choose from… if you really want you can even buy some you can wear to match your children.

Something to read

Books

My girls love books. What is better than something with a good story; including teaching points; words your five year old should be able to (mostly) read alone; and bright, colourful illustrations? Little Birdiebee’s latest release, Caterpillar's Wish* covers all the bases! It's actually written by one of my high school friends, and illustrated by her twin; and Squidgy adores it. It's budget friendly too, so a winner for you and your child.

Something to do

Puzzles

Squidgy is finally at an age where she is ready to sit and do activities like puzzles. Plus, now she's a little older she understands a bit more about how they work. If you have a Frozen fan in your home like me, this Frozen II puzzle pack* (which is available on Amazon†) is the ideal addition to their Christmas gifts this year. With four different pictures to create in four different numbers of pieces, it's bound to keep them occupied for hours! Why not check out Jumbo Games to see what you can find for your five year old!

Science in Wonderland*

STEM is something Squidgy absolutely loves! Now, with Science in Wonderland* from John Adams; she can have chemical free science fun in a magical fairy garden setting… is there really anything better than that for a five year old?

From a tree stump kaleidoscope to flowers blooming in seconds there are instructions and items inside the box for five different experiments! You can pick Science in Wonderland up at Argos, Smyths, Amazon† and Very.

Pindaloo*

Looking for something fun that also has useful qualities? This may be the Christmas gift idea for you! Pindaloo* is recommended 6+ but actually I think you can use your common sense and if you think you 5 year old, like Squidgy, will love it, grab it anyway. It can help improve cognition and coordination, plus is both hilarious and fun (and at times a little frustrating!) In addition it is budget friendly, and easy to get hold of as Pindaloo sell it on online.

Something for me

Baking set

Do you have a five year old who loves to cook and bake in the kitchen with you? Messy Me’s baking gift sets* are just the Christmas gift you're looking for. With an apron, mini rolling pin and cookie cutters in a range of sizes this gift set is a great way to get their own kitchenware started. If your little one is unlikely to be a fan of the floral, don't panic! They also have a grey starry apron alternative too.

Something for family

Family zoo ticket

Did you know you can get a family tickets to ZSL London Zoo as a Buyagift voucher*? What could be a better Christmas gift for your children this year than making memories? The girls both loved their trip to the zoo, in spite of the crazy rain we experience on the day. Especially Squidgy who got to see her all-time favourite animal: giraffes!

For more details and my full review of the zoo check out my ZSL London Zoo post.

So, with just a few weeks until Christmas, there's my top picks for 2019 Christmas gifts for five year olds. I hope amongst them, along with the “7 Gifts” idea; you now have all the inspiration you need to get your Christmas shopping done.

Wishing you a very Happy Christmas from my family and me this year!
