It feels like such a long time since we had a baby's first Christmas to celebrate. This year we have three… of course we have Munchkin but we also celebrated the arrival of my beautiful niece and a new nephew too. Read on to discover my top 2020 gift ideas for babies from newborn to almost toddler.

The rule of 7

Many of us have a home full of “stuff" and Christmas can easily become a time when it gets worse.

This year, more than ever (especially because of the Covid-19 pandemic wreaking havoc on jobs and finances) I believe the rule of 7 is a great way to work on a budget, as well as limit and prioritise gifts within the following 7 groups:

The Rule of 7

Something they need

For changing

Nappies and wraps

If you've followed me for a while, you'll know I'm a cloth bum mum, and as such a huge advocate for making the switch to cloth nappies. Both practical and cute, Christmas is a great time to invest in some cloth nappies. After ordering my own collection of new nappies from them, TotsBots decided they'd love to work with me! I was so excited to be asked to create some Christmas lifestyle shots of their new Christmas EasyFit range*. These nappies have been my favourites since using the TeenyFit nappies on Munchkin's newborn bum!

For teething

Gummee

Just like his sister, Munchkin seems to be getting all his teeth on the early side of the range of time they should come in. He already has 7 with the 8th well on its way. Babies from around 4 months can start to show signs of teething with the first ones often erupting from around 6 months. This makes Gummee Link ‘n’ Teethe* and Heart Teether* the perfect gifts this Christmas. From gift sets to individual stocking fillers, you can find gloves and teething toys suitable for each teething stage on the Gummee website.

For weaning

Plates, bowls and more

I mean, baby shark is one of the most annoying songs on the face of the earth. However, a full set of plates, bowls, cups and cutlery which Munchkin can call his own will not go amiss this Christmas. As babies reach weaning age it is important to make sure you have the appropriate products for giving them their meals. We have chosen to go down the route of baby-led weaning, which means he eats what we eat (and he loves it!) Whichever route you go down, there are suitable items available to help you along the weaning journey.

Bottles

If you've seen my 2020 gift guides for preschoolers and for children, you'll have seen that the girls have some amazing new bottles for our Lake District explorations. Obviously we can't leave the baby out! Whether you breastfeed and express, or use formula milk, a Klean Kanteen Kid Kanteen®* is a great addition to your home for your baby. When they move on from the 5oz baby bottle, Klean Kanteen also have a Kid Kanteen 12oz Sippy Cup†, perfect for a weaning baby or toddler.

For feeding

Muslins

The one thing you can never have too much of when you're a parent is muslins. The large ones can be used to swaddle, the small ones as burp cloths or to wipe snotty noses and mop up milk spew. I got a 5 pack of organic muslins free when I placed an order for the next size cloth nappies for Munchkin which is a helpful top up… but you can buy amazing, soft, organic and natural muslins from many different brands. My favourites include Etta Loves, aden + anais and Frugi.

Something they want

Toys, toys, toys

Eco-friendly and fair trade

If you're looking to go down the eco route with gifts this year, it doesn’t mean you have to skip the toys! Thanks to the amazing, unusual and slightly quirky collection from Weaving Hope* you can pick out a fair trade eco-friendly toy for your wee one as unique as they are. Not only are the toys compliant with UK safety regulations, practical to carry in their own little pouch and super cute, but they are also machine washable… always a winner when it comes to children's toys.

From their favourite TV show

Don't come at me, I know we all aim for "no screen time" but if we're honest, sometimes it's the only way we get anything done as parents. Cocomelon is actually quite good, with their 3D animate videos of nursery rhymes, and a little more educational than many children's programmes (read: Peppa Pig). The Toymaker Cocomelon Musical Yellow School Bus* is a fabulous gift for toddlers this Christmas and plays ‘Wheels on the Bus'. Pick it up in time for Christmas from Argos, Smyths Toys and even Next!

Jack-in-the-box

If you’re looking for something a little different, this Mizzie the Kangaroo Hop Out Mizzie* is a great choice. Munchkin absolutely loves it (although he's a little impatient waiting for Mizzie to hop out!) Just like a jack-in-the-box you wind it up, listen to the music (Pop Goes the Weasel) and wait for Mizzie to jump out the top. I thought it may make him jump, or even scare him a bit at first. Nope! The belly laugh and giggles I got instead were heart warming, and I'm so glad he has this unique toy to play with this Christmas.

Gift sets

Teething toys

Mizzie the Kangaroo doesn't just come as a jack-in-the-box… the teething gift set* is an ideal gift for babies this Christmas. Suitable as soon as babies show signs of teething and chewing on things, this gift set is perfect with its teething ring and squeaky Mizzie. Made from 100% natural, non-toxic rubber this gift set meets safety regulations and is a sure fire way to help soothe your baby's sore gums.

Bath sets

Why not consider getting a gift set for babes and mamas? After all, that mama needs looking after just as much. An Aveeno® Mum & Baby giftset* is a great option with its daily care essentials including moisturising lotion for mum alongside baby lotion and baby hair and body wash. It even includes the cutest little Teddy for baby too! Beautifully presented in a gift box, this gift will be one very much appreciated, I promise!

Something to wear

New PJs

Bonus points for Christmas

Babies and children grow out of their clothes way too quickly for my liking. At an age where they are not really able to ask for 100 different things they want, useful gifts such as pyjamas are always going to be an ideal gift. As Mama Christmas my obvious choice will always be a Christmas set, which can be picked up from supermarkets such as Asda or fashion retail stores such as Matalan or Primark.

Comfy shoes

Moccasins

I have loved Dotty Fish for so long, so when I had the opportunity to work with them for this guide I jumped at it. They have the most beautiful bibs and moccasins* but for my rainbow baby the rainbows have to be the obvious choice. From suede slippers to Christmas snowmen, penguin and robin moccs, there are plenty of options available to choose from in sizes 0-4 years.

Clothes in the next size up

Outfits and more

For the same reason that pyjamas make a great gift for babies, new clothes are always going to be a winner. The best idea when buying clothing is to consider one or two sizes bigger than the clothes they currently wear. Don't forget to always make sure what you pick out things suitable for the seasonal weather that will be around at the age you pick to buy… after all, a snowsuit will be a bit useless in the middle of summer.

Something to read

Babies obviously can't read, but it is never too early to read to your baby. Your baby learnt the sound of your voice while still nestled safe inside the womb. Reading to them is a great way to bond and soothe them too. As they grow and interact a bit more, books like Mizzie the Kangroo Sing with Mizzie* is a great way to help them develop. Interactive buttons allow you to press, listen and sing along to nursery rhymes with your wee one, a great way to enjoy time together.

Something for them

Personalised gifts

I think personalised gifts are my ultimate favourite type of gift. I have ordered many over the years; as well as being lucky enough to work with amazing brands like The Personalised Map Company*. This year I chose to order something for my precious niece and I'm not going to lie, I actually cried when I opened the package. Available in a variety of stunning colourways, this map shows the stars when my niece was born. They are mapped to the date, time and location of your chosen memory. It's personalised with her lovely name (including my precious Grandma's name in the middle!) and a verse suited to her safe arrival.

I cannot recommend this brand and their products enough, and I am so grateful for the beautiful frame they made me. You can choose a gift to celebrate a birth, engagement, wedding and so much more. They even have keyring and so much more available too! All I can say is that I hope my brother and his wife have the same emotional reaction when they open their gift.

Handmade gifts

Ok, I'm probably tooting my own horn a little bit here, but I cannot think of a better gift than a handmade one. These gifts contain all the love and hard work of someone making it especially for you and if you have a skill such as crafting, crochet, sewing and more why not put it to use to make a gift this year? I myself run Mama Naii's Crochet; and this year more than any other year have worked hard on whipping up handmade gifts, including for my children! It's not a cheap cop out, it's a precious keepsake and worth every second of your time.

So that marks the final of 2020's Christmas gift guides… I hope I've given you some great inspiration for gifts for the babies in your family on their first Christmas!

Wishing you a very Happy Christmas from my family and me this year!
