Father's Day is the perfect opportunity to treat dads to something special. In our case, John works so hard to provide a good life for his family, and I wanted to find gifts that would allow him to take the break he deserves. We had the opportunity to enjoy a Bateaux Windsor lunch river cruise thanks to Red Letter Days. Read on to discover why I think these experiences are the perfect gift for him this Father's Day.

Lunch cruise on the Thames with Bateaux Windsor

On board

The Bateuax river boat is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious lunch cruise on the Windsor stretch of the Thames.  The boat has space to seat just under 40 diners. Despite the close proximity of the tables; we were still able to enjoy our meal without feeling like we were sharing a table with other guests on board. The boat also hosts a well stocked bar and kitchen where the meal can be cooked from scratch.

The menu and food

The menu onboard the Bateaux Windsor Thames cruise is a set menu and actually really delicious. The three courses we enjoyed were:

  • Starter: cherry tomato, caramelized onion and goats curd tart.

  • Main: Chicken ballotine with sides.

  • Desert: Eton mess.

In addition you could order extras such as cheese board or bread basket. Of course you also have a range of drinks to choose from, including soft drinks, cocktails and more.

Sightseeing on board Bateaux Windsor

The Bateaux Windsor cruise set sail from Windsor pier, before travelling along the Thames. There is even a quiet tour guide voice talking about the sights along its banks. Here are some of the spots we were able to spot on our journey.

Windsor Castle

If you think of Windsor, it's likely the first thing that comes to mind is its castle. Not only a tourist attraction, but also a home to the Queen at different times of year it is a staple part of the town.  The Bateaux Windsor lunch cruise was the perfect way to get an amazing view of the castle from the river.

Windsor racecourse

I have actually been to watch the races at Windsor racecourse, but until our lunch cruise I had no concept of the massive scale of it. It is huge! We saw it from many different angles as we cruised along the Thames. There wasn't any races on the day we went, but it was still amazing to see it.

Windsor loch and weir

The loch and weir are a beautiful spot on the Thames in Windsor, and are the final sight to see on the lunch cruise. I remember watching Boulter's Loch in Maidenhead further along the Thames, but haven't seen the Windsor one before. I'm not going to lie, the weir ended up with our date conversation turning to our children, as they're obsessed with them!

Birdspotting fun

The Thames is just like any other river, lake or canal really... full of colour to the sides and wildlife to spot. We may be adults, but that didn't stop us enjoying the chance to spot swans, geese and more along the way on our cruise.

Being together

The best thing about going on the Bateaux Windsor lunch cruise was the opportunity for John and I to be together. As far as Father's Day gifts go, this is an ideal choice. After all, being a dad isn't the be all and end all, sometimes it's nice to remember you're a couple as well as parents. I did feel like that tables were quite close together, which I guess you'd expect on the slim boats they have. Despite this we didn't feel like we or the people next to us were invading our space, or taking away from the time John and I were having together.
