Advent: Counting Down to Christmas

If you've seen my blog (in particular my Christmas category and photos!) or social media lately you will know I love Christmas. Although I shop all year round, start blogging in September and crack out the Christmas jumpers and music in October; December is when Christmas in the Hassan household really cranks up a notch.

From my favourite Christmas recipes to how we decorate our home, over the next few weeks I will be hosting #Blogmas and sharing everything to do with Christmas. Today is all about advent, and how we do the countdown to the big man in red delivering our stockings!

Advent calendars

One of the best parts of Christmas for me is bringing out all things handmade, from the stockings and decorations to our amazing family advent calendars. These DIY advent calendars allow us to choose what we get each day and for me it means taking a step away from the traditional chocolate. I actually wrote a post last year with some alternative ideas for filling advent calendars like these which you can read here.

This year we also have a little added extra in the form of a Lego and Playmobil advent calendar for the girls. I bought them cheap in the sale last year and I'm sure they will love them!

Advent candle(s)

John and I have always lit an advent candle throughout the month of December; but with busy lives and especially now we have children, it can be difficult to remember to light them. This year I have swapped our traditional pillar candle to individual tealights which I picked up in The Range.

Elf on a shelf

Our elf Belle joined us a few years ago now but the last couple of years she started to be a part of the increasingly popular elf on a shelf trend. If you're looking for inspiration for your own elf I have roundups from 2016 and 2017 which you can find here. This year with Squidgy in school each morning I will have to be extra vigilant to not forget to do something with her the night before! Belle brings fun and Christmas magic to our home and I enjoy having her as part of our advent countdown just as much as the girls do!

Countdown chalk board

This year we ordered a super cheap countdown chalk board from eBay to add a little something extra to our countdown to Christmas. Squidgy is doing so well with her counting and reading of numbers that I really thing this will be a great added bonus as she can be the one to do the countdown!

So there you have it. Advent has started and the countdown to Christmas has finally begun. Now all there is to say is happy advent! However you decide to countdown to Christmas I hope you have a truly wonderful December.
