Lanercost Priory | Exploring Cumbria

Exploring old ruins is something that our family loves to do. Over the years we have visited plenty of places, especially thanks to our English Heritage and National Trust memberships.

In this blog post I'll share everything you need to know about Lanercost Priory and hopefully help make your visit a little easier if you're staying in the local area. Read on, and discover photos from our visit too!

About Lanercost Priory

Lanercost Priory is a 12th century priory situated in the village of Lanercost. This medieval monastic site was home to a community of Augustinian canons, and was founded by Robert de Vaux. In its later life a branch of the Dacre family set up residence here. On site beside the ruins is the church, which was converted to a Parish Church in the 18th century and is still used today.

Lanercost Priory is well preserved, with plenty of walls and ruins to explore. It’s close proximity to Hadrian's Wall originally seemed a good idea, however in the 400 years after its foundation it got caught in crossfire thanks to its location in the tumultuous and violent border region between England and Scotland.

Where can I park?

Lanercost Priory does have a small car park on site. However it fills up quickly, especially when people are visiting the church. Alternative options include the car park at Lanercost Bridge and the Lanercost Tea Rooms next door to the Priory.

What is available at Lanercost Priory?

Ticket office and gift shop

From guide books to children's toys, and alcohol to fridge magnets, you can buy your entry ticket (unless you’re a member and it's free) and small gifts for you, your family, and your friends at the ticket office and gift shop on site.

The Parish Church

Next door to Lanercost Priory is The Church of St Mary Magdalene. This church is not owned or ran by English Heritage but does continue to offer regular Anglican services, and is open every day.

The tombs

Lanercost Priory served as a mausoleum for it's founders and their descendants. You can find 21 graves of varying age amongst the Priory ruins.

The ruins

Lanercost Priory is the best preserved Cumrbian monastery and offers top tier arches, Roman stonework, and areas still standing to their full height for you to see and explore.

FAQs about our family days out

Is it suitable for children?

I think so! Ultimately it depends on what your children are into. Mine love exploring old ruins, and can garner hours of entertainment playing and exploring places like Lanercost Priory. Older children may enjoy the history, younger children may enjoy exploring the different areas throughout the ruins. It's not a huge site, and makes a great quick and easy day out with your family.

N.B. Although pushchairs are allowed, please be aware that there are areas of uneven ground and steps which make using one a little difficult on site.

Are there facilities available?

Unfortunately, Lanercost Priory does not have toilet on site. However just around the corner there are facilities available at Lanercost Tea Rooms.

Is there anywhere to eat nearby?

A short walk (and an even shorter drive) round the corner from Lanercost Priory you'll find the Lanercost Tea Rooms. A lovely little café with indoor and outdoor seating, it's the perfect spot to grab a bite. Or, like us, you could bring a picnic with you instead!

What's nearby?

Birdoswald Roman Fort

Another English Heritage site, the ruins of Birdoswald offer a fantastic place to enjoy a day out with children. Read more here.

The Old Bridge

Four local masons built the old bridge over the River Irthing in 1724. There are local walks and photo opportunities here.

We love being English Heritage members, and it has given us the opportunity to explore so many places we may never have visited otherwise.

With this guide I've share everything you need to enjoy a day out in Lanercost from the Priory to other places in the local area. Enjoy!
